Quran Tag #10 : Dua’a for Coolness of The Eyes

“And those who say, “Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us a leader [i.e., example] for the righteous.”” – Surah Al-Furqan 25:74

Coolness of the eyes means our tears become cool and be shed as tears of joy and comfort.

When we ask Allah SWT in this dua’a to make our spouses and our children the coolness of our eyes, we are directly asking that they make our eyes moist with that coolness which will continually bring happiness and comfort to us from them.

Think about Asiah, Firaun’s wife. She had no place to run from Firaun and continually turned to Allah SWT saying, “My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise and save me from Pharaoh and his deeds and save me from the wrongdoing people.” Surah At-Tahrim (66:11)

But Allah lSWT is the most merciful, the most wise, and He sends baby Musa AS in the river. As Asiah picked baby Musa (AS) up, she said: “And the wife of Pharaoh said, “[He will be] a comfort of the eye for me and for you. Do not kill him; perhaps he may benefit us, or we may adopt him as a son.” And they perceived not.” Surah al-Qasas (28:9)

On the other hand, can you imagine the emotion when Musa AS’s mother was reunited with her child again when she’s appointed as his wet nurse? Can you imagine the tears of happiness? Allah SWT is describing the most amazing joy and the most indescribable feeling in the heart of a mother! And what expression does He use? ‘The coolness of the eyes’, to depict that powerfully.

By making this dua’a we are asking Allah to make our families a safe haven from the chaos of the outside world, that they fill our eyes with tears of joy and we feel like we have finally come to a place where we can rest and relax when we are with them.

May Allah forgive all of our shortcomings and accept all of our dua’a.

Quran Tag #8 : Yunus AS and the Whale, Quran Tag #9 : Dua’a

“And [mention] the man of the fish [i.e., Jonah], when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, “There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.” So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.” – Al-Anbiya 21:87-88

Despite being insulted by their nations, Prophets still addressed them in a loving way. However, one day, Yunus AS was so angry with his nation that he left them. He was convinced that Allah SWT would not reprimand him as he didn’t do anything wrong. He went to the sea but he had to be pushed overboard. He was swallowed by a sea creature then and in the depth of darkness, he cried for Allah. No person can hear him, but Allah could hear him.

Sometimes we are at a dark situation due to our own doing. Human being has the tendency to have an attitude of blaming others or even blaming Allah, saying that we don’t deserve the afflictions. We should have the attitude of Yunus AS – he recognized that Allah is Perfect and the fault is with him. He didn’t even blame his nation.

By declaring Allah’s perfection, Allah rescued him from his misery and sadness. May we always recognize our commitment to Allah – no one should be obeyed or adored more than Allah.

Quran Tag #7: In The Eyes of Allah

“He [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ) ] frowned and turned away. Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. But what would make you perceive, [O Muḥammad], that perhaps he might be purified. Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? As for he who thinks himself without need, To him you give attention. And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge], While he fears [Allah], From him you are distracted. No! Indeed, they [i.e., these verses] are a reminder; So whoever wills may remember it. [It is recorded] in honored sheets, Exalted and purified, [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, Noble and dutiful.” – Abasa 80:1-16

Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum was a blind man and was amongst the first to accept Islam. Abdullah was devoted to the Rasulullah SAW and he was so eager to memorize Quran that he would not miss any opportunity to learn.

One day, as Rasulullah was engaged with the Quraysh notables to tell them about Islam, Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum came up and asked him to read a verse from the Quran. He didn’t realize the company that Rasulullah was with. He said, “O messenger of God, teach me from what God has taught you.” Rasulullah frowned and turned away from him and instead turned his attention to the Quraysh, hoping that they would become Muslims and that by their acceptance of Islam they would bring greatness to the religion and strengthen his mission.

At this point Allah SWT reveals these 16 verses to Rasulullah on Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum. From that day Rasulullah did not cease to be generous to him, to ask him about his affairs and take him into his council whenever he approached.

Quran Tag #6 : Live a Life of Forgiveness

“And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give [aid] to their relatives and the needy and the emigrants for the cause of Allah, and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” – An-Nur 24:22

This verse reminds us to always uphold the ties of kinship with our relatives who are needy or who migrated for the sake of Allah, which is the ultimate act of kindness in the area of upholding kinship ties. Allah reminds us to forgive past insults and bad treatment. It shows that if we forgive others, Allah will also forgive our sins. This is part of the patience, generosity and kindness of Allah towards His creation.

This ayah was revealed concerning Abu Bakr As-Siddiq when he swore that he would not help Mistah bin Uthathah after he slandered A’ishah RA. When Allah revealed the innocence of A’ishah, those believers who had talked about the matter repented.

Mistah was the cousin of Abu Bakr, the son of his maternal aunt, and he was a poor man with no wealth except whatever Abu Bakr spent on him. He was one of those who had migrated for the sake of Allah. He had invented the lies and the slander, but then Allah accepted his repentance. When this verse was revealed, Allah started to soften the heart of Abu Bakr towards Mistah.

This proves that he deserved to be called As-Siddiq, and may we always follow his footsteps to be known for generosity and always helping relatives and strangers alike.

Quran Tag #5 : Multiply Reward

“Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned. ” – Al-Baqarah 2:245

This verse inquires who is it that donate from the wealth Allah has given in helping the needy, so that Allah would multiply it to him manifold.

The word ‘loan’ refers to good deeds and to the act of spending in the way of Allah. This was expressed figuratively as qard (literally, ‘loan’ ), otherwise everything belongs to Allah. It simply means that whatever you spend will surely be returned to you (in the form of a reward in the Hereafter) just as a loan is surely returned.

Giving ‘loan’ to Allah Almighty has also been explained as the giving of actual loan to His slaves i.e. the human beings and thereby helping them in their hour of need.

It is Allah SWT who withholds and amplifies the sustenance of the servants. This statement points to the idea that do not think that donation and giving alms causes your wealth to be diminished. The increase and decrease of our sustenance only depend on Allah SWT.

May this ayah keeps us motivated to continuously give donations and alms.

Quran Tag #4 : What is the Ultimate Loss?

“And of the people is he who worships Allah on an edge. If he is touched by good, he is reassured by it; but if he is struck by trial, he turns on his face [to unbelief]. He has lost [this] world and the Hereafter. That is what is the manifest loss.” – Surah al-Hajj 22:11

Allah SWT describes in this verse about a person who is only committed to Islam as long as it’s convenient and his life is good. But once trial or calamity befalls him, he turns back on his faith as if he never believed in Allah to begin with. Allah says that this person has lost his dunya and akhirah – he hasn’t earn anything towards his afterlife and he hasn’t earn anything towards this word – this is clearly the ultimate loss.

May Allah SWT gives us the firmness of the heart that we are able to maintain strength of our faith through difficult times.

x

Quran Tag #3 : Stop Complaining and Be Grateful

“And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe. And Moses said, “If you should disbelieve, you and whoever is on the earth entirely – indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.” – Surah Ibrahim 14:7-8

Well, I complaint about a lot of things especially at work (my subordinates can testify to that 😜) so this is something I’m currently working on in order to improve myself.

In this ayah, Allah SWT didn’t limit what He’ll increase us in, for as long as we show gratitude. And it’s not just gratitude to Him, but also gratitude towards everyone and everything else in our lives.

This ayah serves as a motivation for me to change my perspective, stop complaining, and be grateful at every situation. Stop complaining that I have an overwhelming workloads; instead start being happy that I am not jobless like so many others. Stop complaining that I have been sick for a week; instead start being happy that I am not sicker like so many others.

Start being grateful and Allah SWT will increase and increase because that is His promise. May Allah SWT helps us all recognize that promise and qualify us for it.

Quran Tag #2 : Trials for One Another

“And We did not send before you, [O Muḥammad], any of the messengers except that they ate food and walked in the markets. And We have made some of you [people] as trial for others – will you have patience? And ever is your Lord, Seeing. ” – Surah al-Furqan 25:20

Have you ever ponder, that we are made as trials for one another? Parents are trials to their children, and children are trials to their parents. Husband is a trial to his wife and vice versa. Siblings are trial to each other. Work superiors, colleagues, and friends can be our trials too. Even strangers can be a trial to us – how we easily get angry with the slow cashiers or inefficient waitresses. We sometimes lose our patience way too easily, too.

In this ayah, it explains that Allah SWT knows and sees your struggle in life in managing your trials, and as His servant, we need to bear patience when face with hardship and calamity, and know that Allah SWT will reward all our efforts to remain patience.

May this ayah teaches us to have more patience towards each others.

Quran Tag #1 : Fasting in Ramadan

“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous. [Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] – then an equal number of other days [are to be made up]. And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] – a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]. And whoever volunteers good [i.e., excess] – it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew. ” – Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183-184

With the above verse, the Holy Quran makes it clear that fasting was ordained compulsory on all Muslims and that they have to fast if they are to stay righteous. Fasting is to abstain from food, drink and sexual activity with the intention of doing so sincerely for Allah the Exalted alone. This is because fasting purifies the souls and cleanses them from the evil that might mix with them and their ill behavior. Allah mentioned that He has ordained fasting for Muslims just as He ordained it for those before them, they being an example for them in that, so they should vigorously perform this obligation more obediently than the previous nations.

May we always make the most of Ramadan months.

I’m starting to love this habit of daily donation, I’m thinking of continuing this even beyond Ramadan. I’m so thankful that many opportunities are created by NGOs for us to contribute, and hopefully the contribution is channeled properly to those in needs.
